Mathilda (gastropod)

Mathilda is a genus of minute sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Mathildidae. These snails are characterized by their slender, high-spired shells which are typically ornamented with spiral ridges and axial ribs. The shells are generally small, often less than 10mm in length.

Mathilda snails are found in a variety of marine habitats, often in the subtidal zone and deeper waters. They are distributed globally, though the exact ranges of specific species may vary.

The diet of Mathilda species is not well-understood for all members of the genus. Some species are thought to be detritivores or to graze on microorganisms.

Taxonomic classification of Mathilda has undergone revision over time, and relationships within the genus and to other members of the Mathildidae family continue to be studied using morphological and molecular data. The number of recognized species within the genus fluctuates as new species are described and existing species are reclassified.
