Mary Montagu, Duchess of Montagu (1689–1751)

Mary Montagu, Duchess of Montagu, (née Churchill) (1689 – 14 May 1751) was a British courtier and society figure. She was the youngest daughter of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, and Sarah Jennings.

Born into a family of immense political influence, Mary benefited from her parents' connections at court and her mother's close friendship with Queen Anne. Her sisters included Henrietta, Countess of Godolphin, and Anne, Countess of Sunderland.

In 1705, she married John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu. Through this marriage, she became Duchess of Montagu. The Duke was a prominent nobleman known for his wealth and eccentricities. The marriage produced a family, though her male heir pre-deceased her.

As Duchess of Montagu, Mary played a role in fashionable society and court life. While she was not as publicly prominent or politically active as her mother, she participated in the social functions and patronage expected of a woman of her station. Her social circle included leading figures of the time, and she held positions within the royal household.

She held the position of Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Caroline, the wife of George II. This role placed her in close proximity to the Queen and allowed her to wield some degree of influence within the royal court.

Mary Montagu, Duchess of Montagu, died on 14 May 1751. She is remembered as a member of a powerful and influential family and a figure in the social and courtly life of early 18th-century Britain.
