The Clique (American band)

The Clique was an American rock band formed in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1965. They are best known for their 1969 hit single, "Sugar on Sunday," written by Tommy James and Micki Vale. The band's original lineup consisted of Rick Price (vocals), Ernie Nunez (guitar), Sid Smith (bass), and John "Spider" Salvato (drums).

The Clique gained regional popularity in the late 1960s before signing with White Whale Records. "Sugar on Sunday" reached the Top 40 in the United States and achieved greater success internationally, particularly in Australia and the United Kingdom. The song's bubblegum pop sound contrasted with some of the heavier rock emerging at the time.

Following the success of "Sugar on Sunday," The Clique released further singles and albums, but they failed to replicate their initial breakthrough. The band went through lineup changes and eventually disbanded in the early 1970s. Despite their relatively short career, "Sugar on Sunday" remains a popular oldies track and a notable example of the bubblegum pop genre from the late 1960s.
