Marvejols

Marvejols is a commune in the Lozère department in southern France. It is one of the two subprefectures of the department; the other is Florac Trois Rivières.

Geography:

Marvejols is situated in the Gévaudan region, nestled in the Colagne valley, a tributary of the Lot river. Its location places it at a crossroads of routes connecting the Aubrac plateau with the Margeride mountains.

History:

The history of Marvejols is closely linked to the counts of Barcelona and kings of Aragon, who held significant power in the Gévaudan during the Middle Ages. The town received a charter in 1307 and developed into an important commercial center. During the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, Marvejols suffered significant damage and was largely destroyed. Rebuilt in the 17th century, it retains some of its medieval architectural elements, including parts of its ramparts and gates.
