Marinho (footballer, born 1943)
Marinho Chagas, also known simply as Marinho, (born Luiz Carlos da Silva Matos on January 15, 1943, in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil – died May 31, 2014, also in Natal) was a Brazilian footballer who played as a left-back. He is regarded as one of the best left-backs in Brazilian football history and was known for his attacking style of play, dribbling skills, and powerful shots.
Marinho played for several clubs throughout his career, including Náutico, Botafogo, Fluminense, and New York Cosmos. He also played for the Brazilian national team, representing his country in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. He featured in all seven of Brazil’s matches at the tournament, helping the team finish fourth.
After retiring from football, Marinho worked as a football commentator and analyst. He also ventured into politics, running for office in his home state of Rio Grande do Norte. He passed away in 2014 from internal bleeding caused by cirrhosis. Marinho's flair and attacking prowess from the left-back position set a new standard for fullbacks in Brazil and globally. He is remembered as a pioneering figure who helped redefine the role of the modern fullback.
