State Highway 36 (New Zealand)

State Highway 36 (SH36) is a New Zealand state highway connecting Rotorua to Tauranga via Pyes Pa. It is primarily a rural road traversing hilly terrain and featuring numerous bends.

Route:

SH36 begins at a junction with State Highway 30 (SH30) on the eastern edge of Rotorua. From there, it travels generally north-eastward, winding through farmland and forest. It passes through or near the settlements of Ngongotaha and Hamurana before continuing towards the Kaimai Range. The highway climbs gradually, offering views of the surrounding landscape. After traversing a section of the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park, the road descends towards Tauranga. It terminates at a junction with State Highway 29 (SH29) in Pyes Pa, a suburb of Tauranga.

Characteristics:

The highway is predominantly a two-lane road with a posted speed limit that varies along its length, reflecting the changing road conditions and the presence of settlements. SH36 is known for its winding nature, requiring drivers to exercise caution, particularly during adverse weather. The road is generally sealed, although some older sections may have surface variations.

Importance:

SH36 provides an alternative route between Rotorua and Tauranga, supplementing State Highway 36. It offers a more scenic route, though potentially slower than other options, and connects smaller communities that are not directly served by the main arterial routes. It also provides access to recreational areas within the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park.

Maintenance:

The road is maintained by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
