Lakshya (2004 film)

Lakshya is a 2004 Indian Hindi-language war drama film directed by Farhan Akhtar and starring Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, and Amitabh Bachchan. The film follows the fictionalized account of Lieutenant Karan Shergill (Roshan), who transforms from an aimless young man into a dedicated and courageous army officer during the 1999 Kargil War.

The story begins with Karan's uncertain future after graduating from college. He impulsively joins the Indian Military Academy (IMA), but struggles with the rigorous training and discipline. Disheartened, he deserts the academy, straining his relationship with his girlfriend, Romila Dutta (Zinta), a journalism student.

Karan realizes his mistake and rejoins the army, determined to prove himself. He undergoes a rigorous training regime and is eventually commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 13th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment. The film then shifts its focus to the Kargil War, where Karan's battalion is tasked with recapturing Point 5179, a strategically important peak.

Under the command of Col. Sunil Damle (Bachchan), Karan and his unit face immense challenges and heavy casualties as they attempt to scale the treacherous mountain. Karan, initially unsure of himself, displays exceptional bravery and leadership, eventually playing a pivotal role in securing the peak.

Lakshya is notable for its realistic portrayal of army life and the psychological transformation of its protagonist. The film explores themes of self-discovery, commitment, and patriotism. It was filmed in locations such as Ladakh, Dehradun, and Delhi. The music, composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, was also well-received. While not a major box office success initially, Lakshya has gained a cult following over the years and is considered a significant war film in Indian cinema.
