La Ronda (estate)

La Ronda is a historic estate located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, on the Philadelphia Main Line. Originally built in 1929, it was a notable example of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture designed by Addison Mizner for Percival Foerderer, a leather manufacturer. The estate was known for its elaborate landscaping, luxurious details, and integration of indoor and outdoor living spaces.

The original La Ronda was demolished in 2009 despite preservation efforts, making it one of the largest residences ever to be torn down in the United States. This demolition sparked considerable controversy and highlighted the challenges of preserving large historic estates.

Following the demolition, a new La Ronda was built on the same property. This newer structure is a recreation of the original design, aiming to recapture the grandeur and architectural style of the Mizner masterpiece. While not an exact replica due to modern building codes and material availability, the new La Ronda stands as a testament to the original estate's significance and serves as a reminder of the architectural heritage lost and then reborn. The recreated estate incorporates some salvaged materials from the original structure where possible.
