Kykuit

Kykuit, also known as the John D. Rockefeller Estate, is a historic house museum in Pocantico Hills, a hamlet in the town of Mount Pleasant, New York. It was home to four generations of the Rockefeller family, beginning with oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller.

The estate's name, Kykuit, comes from the Dutch word meaning "lookout" or "view," reflecting its commanding location overlooking the Hudson River. The main house, a Beaux-Arts mansion, was designed by architects Chester Holmes Aldrich and William Welles Bosworth and completed in 1913.

The estate features extensive gardens designed by Beatrix Farrand, sculptures by prominent artists including Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, and David Smith, and a collection of classic automobiles and carriages.

Kykuit was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976. It is currently owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is open to the public for tours. The estate offers insights into the lives and legacies of the Rockefeller family, their influence on American history, and their contributions to philanthropy and the arts. It represents a significant example of early 20th-century American architecture, landscape design, and art collecting.
