Komakino

Komakino is a track from the Joy Division compilation album Substance, released in 1988. Unlike the other tracks on Substance, which were A-sides, B-sides, or EP tracks, "Komakino" was originally released as part of a flexi disc included with the French magazine L'Affiche in 1980.

Musically, "Komakino" is a brief, instrumental piece. It is characterized by its use of synthesizers and a relatively upbeat tempo compared to much of Joy Division's other work. The track is experimental in nature and offers a glimpse into the band's exploration of electronic sounds, hinting at the direction some members later pursued in New Order.

The title "Komakino" is not a real word and its origin is unknown. Various theories exist, ranging from a misspelling or mishearing of a Japanese word to a completely invented term. The band themselves never clarified the meaning or inspiration behind the title.

Due to its relative obscurity and atypical sound compared to the band's more well-known songs, "Komakino" is often considered a curiosity among Joy Division's discography. It remains a point of interest for fans and scholars of the band's work, offering a small but intriguing insight into their creative process.
