Julia (1974 film)
Julia is a 1977 American period drama film directed by Fred Zinnemann, starring Jane Fonda, Vanessa Redgrave, and Jason Robards. The film is based on a chapter titled "Julia" from Lillian Hellman's 1973 book Pentimento.
The film tells the story of Lillian Hellman's relationship with her childhood friend, Julia, and Julia's anti-Nazi activism in pre-World War II Europe. Hellman, a playwright, is asked to smuggle funds into Nazi Germany to support the resistance movement. The film explores themes of friendship, courage, political commitment, and the dangers of fascism.
Julia was a critical and commercial success, receiving eleven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Jane Fonda. Vanessa Redgrave won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Julia, and Jason Robards won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
