Josef Richard Vilímek (1860–1938)
Josef Richard Vilímek (1860–1938) was a Czech publisher, printer, and editor. He is best known for founding the publishing house J. R. Vilímek, which became a prominent producer of Czech literature, magazines, and illustrated books, particularly for children and young adults.
Vilímek was born in Železnice, Bohemia (then part of the Austrian Empire). He began his career in the printing industry before establishing his own publishing business in Prague. The J. R. Vilímek publishing house played a significant role in promoting Czech national culture and literature during a period of national revival.
His publishing house was noted for its high-quality illustrations and printing techniques, often showcasing the work of leading Czech artists. Some of the notable publications included illustrated editions of classic Czech works, as well as original stories and educational materials.
Vilímek's work contributed significantly to the development of Czech publishing and to the cultural landscape of Bohemia and Czechoslovakia. He died in Prague in 1938.
