John Keenan (Medal of Honor)
John Keenan was a United States Army soldier who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the American Civil War. He served as a Private in Company G, 8th Pennsylvania Reserve Infantry.
On September 17, 1862, at the Battle of Antietam, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, Keenan distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism. During the height of the battle, amidst intense enemy fire, Keenan voluntarily left the safety of his position to rescue a wounded comrade who was lying exposed on the battlefield. He successfully carried the injured soldier to safety, thereby saving his life.
For this act of valor, Private John Keenan was awarded the Medal of Honor on November 18, 1864. His citation reads: "Voluntarily exposed himself to a heavy fire to rescue a wounded comrade."
His actions exemplify the courage and selflessness expected of those who receive the nation's highest military honor. Further biographical information on John Keenan is somewhat scarce, highlighting the many unsung heroes of the Civil War.
