Apocope

Apocope (pronounced ə-POH-kə-pee) is a linguistic term referring to the omission of one or more sounds or letters from the end of a word. This elision often occurs due to ease of pronunciation or phonetic simplification in speech, and can sometimes become established in standard language. It is a type of truncation.

Apocope differs from aphaeresis, which involves the omission of sounds or letters at the beginning of a word, and syncope, which involves the omission of sounds or letters from the middle of a word. All three are types of phonological processes.

While apocope can be a feature of informal speech, it can also be a systematic feature of a language's morphology or phonology. Whether the apocopated form is considered grammatically correct or acceptable varies depending on the language and the specific context.
