John Gilligan (footballer, born 1884)
John Gilligan (born in Sunderland in 1884, date of death unknown) was an English footballer who played as a full back.
Gilligan began his professional career with Sunderland, but made no first-team appearances. He then moved to Newcastle United in 1905, where he similarly failed to break into the first team. In 1906, he signed for Middlesbrough, where he finally made his professional debut and enjoyed a more substantial period in the side. He played for Middlesbrough for two seasons before leaving for Southern League club Crystal Palace in 1908. His subsequent career details are unconfirmed but he is believed to have remained in the Southern League, potentially with another club. His career appears to have concluded before the First World War.
