John Collins (Independent minister)

John Collins (1624 – 1687) was an English Independent minister, known for his scholarship and pastoral work. Born in Warwickshire, he was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and was a fellow there until his ejection in 1662 for nonconformity following the Act of Uniformity.

Collins served as a chaplain in the English navy and subsequently ministered to congregations in both England and the Netherlands. He was pastor of the English church in Rotterdam for many years, where he was highly regarded for his preaching and theological understanding. He maintained connections with other prominent nonconformists of the era and actively participated in theological debates.

Collins was also a physician and a scientist, reflecting the broad interests common amongst intellectuals of his time. He published works on various subjects, including medicine and theology. His writings reveal a commitment to Reformed theology and a concern for practical godliness. He is remembered as a learned and devoted minister who faced persecution for his religious convictions.
