John Blagrave (major)

John Blagrave (1753-1814) was a British Army officer who served with the East India Company. He achieved the rank of Major and is primarily known for his involvement in the Siege of Mangalore in 1783-1784 during the Second Anglo-Mysore War. He commanded a detachment of troops during the long and difficult siege, which ultimately ended in a negotiated surrender to Tipu Sultan's forces. Details of his earlier military career or activities after his service in India are less readily available, making a comprehensive biography difficult to construct. His service at Mangalore, however, marks him as a significant figure in the context of British military involvement in India during the late 18th century. His name appears in contemporary accounts and historical records relating to the siege. Further research into East India Company records and military archives may reveal more specific details of his career trajectory and contributions.
