Johann Fritz (piano maker)

Johann Fritz (1751-1834) was an Austrian piano maker based in Vienna during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was a prominent figure in the Viennese piano-making tradition, known for his innovative designs and high-quality instruments. Fritz pianos were highly regarded for their clear tone, responsive action, and elegant craftsmanship.

Fritz's workshop produced both square pianos and fortepianos (early grand pianos). He is particularly noted for his improvements to the Viennese action, making it lighter and more responsive. Many notable musicians, including Ludwig van Beethoven, owned or played Fritz pianos. Beethoven reportedly favored Fritz pianos for their expressive capabilities.
