Xiaozi

Xiaozi (孝子) is a Chinese term primarily referring to a filial son or daughter; someone who embodies the virtue of filial piety. It denotes a child who demonstrates respect, obedience, and care towards their parents. While the term specifically refers to a son or daughter, the concept of xiao (孝), meaning filial piety, applies to all children regardless of gender.

The concept of xiaozi is deeply rooted in Confucian ethics and is considered a fundamental virtue in Chinese culture. A xiaozi is expected to provide for their parents' needs, respect their wishes, and honor their memory, both during their lifetime and after their death. This may involve caring for them in their old age, ensuring they have adequate food, shelter, and healthcare, and performing traditional mourning rituals.

The responsibilities of a xiaozi often extend beyond immediate parents to include grandparents and other elder relatives. Maintaining harmonious relationships within the family is a key aspect of demonstrating filial piety.

The ideal of the xiaozi is not simply about blind obedience; it involves understanding and respecting the wisdom and experience of one's elders, while also contributing to the well-being of the family unit. A true xiaozi strives to be a good and successful person, reflecting positively on their family and bringing honor to their name. The opposite of xiaozi would be someone considered unfilial or disrespectful towards their parents and elders.
