Jhorhat

Jhorhat is a city and a municipal board in the Jhorhat district of the state of Assam, India. It is located on the bank of the Bhogdoi River and is a major urban hub in Upper Assam.

History:

Jhorhat's name is derived from "Jor" meaning twin and "hat" meaning market. The two markets, Chowkihat and Macharhat, are believed to have given the city its name. Historically, it served as the last capital of the Ahom kingdom. Following the Moamoria rebellion, the Ahom kingdom weakened, and the capital was shifted to Jhorhat by Gaurinath Singha.

Geography:

Jhorhat is situated in the upper Brahmaputra valley. The region is characterized by fertile plains and is known for its tea plantations. The climate is humid subtropical.

Economy:

Jhorhat is well-connected by road, rail, and air. Rowriah Airport provides air connectivity to major Indian cities. The city has a railway station on the Northeast Frontier Railway network. National Highway 37 passes through Jhorhat, providing road connectivity.
