James McGrath (Canadian politician)
James McGrath, PC, OC (January 11, 1932 – February 15, 2017) was a Canadian politician who served as a Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament for St. John's East, Newfoundland, for several periods between 1957 and 1989. He held several ministerial portfolios during his parliamentary career.
Early Life and Career:
Born in St. John's, Newfoundland, McGrath received his education at St. Bonaventure's College and Memorial University. Before entering politics, he worked as a broadcaster and journalist.
Political Career:
McGrath was first elected to the House of Commons in 1957. He served intermittently, losing elections and then regaining his seat. He was a vocal advocate for Newfoundland and Labrador's interests within the federal government.
During his time in Parliament, McGrath served in various roles, including:
- Minister of State (Mines): He held this position under Prime Minister Joe Clark in 1979.
- Minister of Fisheries and Oceans: McGrath served as Minister of Fisheries and Oceans in the Progressive Conservative government of Brian Mulroney.
- Chairman of the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs: McGrath was a strong advocate for veterans and dedicated significant efforts to addressing their concerns.
McGrath resigned from cabinet in 1986 following a conflict of interest allegation. He was subsequently cleared of any wrongdoing but did not return to cabinet. He remained an active MP until his retirement from politics in 1989.
