Camp Justice (Iraq)

Camp Justice, also known as Camp Ashraf or Ashraf City, was a compound located in Diyala Governorate, Iraq, approximately 60 kilometers north of Baghdad and 80 kilometers east of Baqubah. It served as the primary base for the People's Mujahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), an Iranian opposition group, from the mid-1980s until its closure in 2013.

The PMOI/MEK established the camp during the Iran-Iraq War with the support of Saddam Hussein's regime. The organization used Camp Ashraf as a training ground and staging area for operations against the Iranian government. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the United States military initially disarmed and protected the residents of Camp Ashraf.

Over time, the relationship between the PMOI/MEK and the Iraqi government deteriorated, particularly after the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 2011. The Iraqi government sought to close the camp and relocate its residents. This led to numerous clashes between Iraqi security forces and the residents of Camp Ashraf, resulting in casualties. International organizations, including the United Nations, became involved in efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the situation.

The residents of Camp Ashraf were eventually relocated to Camp Liberty, a temporary transit facility near Baghdad International Airport, with the ultimate goal of resettlement in third countries. Camp Ashraf was officially closed in September 2013, marking the end of the PMOI/MEK's long-term presence in the area. The site was subsequently repurposed by the Iraqi government.
