Jack Gibbs (cricketer)

Jack Gibbs (born July 25, 1936) is a former West Indian cricketer, widely regarded as one of the greatest off-spin bowlers of all time. Gibbs played in 79 Test matches for the West Indies between 1958 and 1976, taking 309 wickets at an average of 29.09.

Known for his accuracy, flight, and ability to extract bounce and turn, Gibbs was a key member of the West Indies team during his era. He formed a formidable spin partnership with Lance Gibbs (no relation), often stifling opposing batsmen and creating opportunities for the faster bowlers.

Notable achievements in Gibbs' career include:

  • Being the first West Indian spinner to take 300 Test wickets.
  • Holding the record for the most five-wicket hauls in an innings by a West Indian spinner in Test matches (18).
  • His best innings figures were 8 wickets for 38 runs against India in 1962.
  • His best match figures were 11 wickets for 123 runs against Australia in 1973.

After retiring from international cricket, Gibbs remained involved in the sport as a coach and administrator. He is considered a legend of West Indies cricket and an inspiration to aspiring spin bowlers.
