Inyoite
Inyoite is a rare hydrated borate mineral with the chemical formula CaB2O4(OH)4•H2O. It is a secondary mineral that forms in sedimentary deposits of boron.
Properties: Inyoite typically occurs as colorless to white monoclinic crystals, often as aggregates or massive forms. It has a pearly to vitreous luster. Its hardness ranges from 1.5 to 2 on the Mohs scale, making it a relatively soft mineral. The specific gravity is approximately 1.88. Inyoite is soluble in hot water.
Occurrence: Inyoite is found in arid regions in association with other borate minerals like borax, colemanite, and ulexite. Notable localities include Death Valley, California (its namesake location in Inyo County), Argentina, and Turkey. It forms as a product of the alteration of other borate minerals in evaporite deposits.
Uses: Inyoite does not have significant industrial uses. It is primarily a mineral specimen sought by collectors. The presence of inyoite in geological formations is an indicator of specific evaporitic conditions.
