Interstate 295 (Maine)
Interstate 295 (I-295) is a 52.38-mile (84.30 km) auxiliary Interstate Highway in the U.S. state of Maine. It serves as a bypass route of I-95, providing a more direct route between the cities of Portland and Augusta. I-295 begins at a junction with I-95 in Scarborough and ends at another junction with I-95 in West Gardiner.
The highway generally runs parallel to U.S. Route 1 (US 1) and the Androscoggin River. It serves several communities including South Portland, Falmouth, Yarmouth, Freeport, Brunswick, and Topsham. It is a major commuting route, particularly for traffic heading into and out of Portland.
I-295 was originally designated as part of I-95. In the early 1970s, I-95 was rerouted onto the Maine Turnpike (which already existed), and the former alignment was re-designated as I-295. This re-designation was primarily done to streamline the Interstate numbering system, as the Maine Turnpike provided a more direct and higher-quality route for through traffic.
The highway is maintained by the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT). It experiences significant traffic volumes, especially during peak hours and tourist season. Several exits along I-295 provide access to local businesses, tourist attractions, and other destinations.
