INSAT-3DR

INSAT-3DR is an Indian weather satellite launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It is part of the INSAT system, a series of geostationary satellites providing telecommunications, broadcasting, meteorology, and search and rescue services to India.

INSAT-3DR is an advanced meteorological satellite designed to provide enhanced capabilities compared to its predecessors. Its primary payload includes:

  • Imager: A multi-spectral imager capable of capturing images in the visible, infrared, and water vapor bands. These images are used for monitoring weather patterns, cloud cover, and surface temperatures.

  • Sounder: An atmospheric sounder that measures vertical profiles of temperature and humidity. This data is crucial for weather forecasting and atmospheric research.

  • Data Relay Transponder (DRT): Used for collecting meteorological data from unattended data collection platforms (DCPs) deployed on land and ocean.

  • Satellite Aided Search and Rescue (SAS&R) Transponder: Part of the international COSPAS-SARSAT program, aiding in the detection and location of distress signals from ships, aircraft, and individuals.

The INSAT-3DR satellite is positioned in geostationary orbit, allowing for continuous monitoring of the Indian subcontinent and surrounding regions. The data from INSAT-3DR is used extensively by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for weather forecasting, disaster management, and climate monitoring. The improved resolution and advanced capabilities of INSAT-3DR have significantly enhanced India's ability to predict and respond to severe weather events.
