INS Tanin (2012)
INS Tanin is a diesel-electric submarine of the Israeli Navy. A Dolphin-class submarine, it was built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) in Kiel, Germany. "INS" stands for Israeli Naval Ship.
Ordered in 2006 and launched in 2012, the INS Tanin represents a significant upgrade to the Israeli submarine fleet. It features advanced technology, including air-independent propulsion (AIP), which allows it to remain submerged for significantly longer periods than conventional diesel-electric submarines. The AIP system on the Tanin is based on a hydrogen fuel cell.
The INS Tanin, along with its sister submarines, is believed to provide Israel with a second-strike capability and is considered a strategic asset, playing a crucial role in maintaining the country's maritime security and deterring potential adversaries. The exact specifications and capabilities of the INS Tanin are classified, but it is known to be armed with torpedoes, mines, and potentially cruise missiles. The Tanin is based in Haifa, Israel.
