Howard Sims (architect)

Howard Sims (1932 – 2017) was a prominent African American architect based in Washington, D.C. He was known for his modernist designs and his commitment to community development through architecture.

Sims earned his architecture degree from Howard University in 1956. After graduation, he gained experience working with several established firms before founding his own practice, Sims & Associates, in 1967. Later the firm was known as Sims, Varner & Associates, and eventually Sims Group.

Sims’ work encompassed a wide range of building types, including residential, commercial, and institutional projects. He was particularly active in designing affordable housing and community centers in underserved neighborhoods within Washington, D.C. His designs often incorporated elements of sustainability and reflected a sensitivity to the needs and cultural context of the communities they served.

Notable projects attributed to Sims include: the former Eastern Branch of the D.C. Public Library (later converted to other use), several housing developments for the D.C. Housing Authority, and significant contributions to the design and planning of the Shaw neighborhood revitalization. He also served on various civic boards and commissions, advocating for responsible development and equitable access to architectural services. Howard Sims was a fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA).
