Hottentot (racial term)
Hottentot is an outdated and offensive term formerly used to refer to the Khoikhoi, a group of indigenous peoples of southwestern Africa. The term is now considered a racial slur due to its historical association with colonialism, dehumanization, and the justification of oppression.
The origin of the word "Hottentot" is debated, but it's generally believed to be derived from the Dutch language. One theory suggests it's an onomatopoeic representation of the "click" sounds characteristic of the Khoisan languages spoken by the Khoikhoi. However, this interpretation is contested and considered pejorative, as it reduces the culture and language of an entire group of people to a simplistic imitation of their speech.
Historically, European colonizers used the term "Hottentot" to distinguish the Khoikhoi from other groups in the region. Over time, it became associated with negative stereotypes about the Khoikhoi, portraying them as primitive, uncivilized, and inferior. This prejudiced view served as a justification for colonial exploitation, land dispossession, and discriminatory practices.
The term "Hottentot Venus," referring to Saartjie Baartman, a Khoikhoi woman who was exhibited as a curiosity in Europe in the 19th century, exemplifies the dehumanizing nature of this term. Her treatment and the use of the "Hottentot" label underscore the deeply ingrained racism associated with the word.
Today, the term "Hottentot" is widely recognized as offensive and should never be used. Appropriate and respectful terms for referring to the Khoikhoi people include Khoikhoi or Khoi.
