Horro (cattle)

The Horro is an indigenous cattle breed primarily found in the Horro Guduru Wollega Zone of the Oromia Region, in western Ethiopia. These cattle are characterized by their adaptation to the specific agro-ecological conditions of the region, including the climate, available forage, and prevalent livestock diseases.

Horro cattle are typically small to medium in size and display a range of coat colors, although brown and white are common. They are primarily raised for milk and meat production, contributing significantly to the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the region. They also serve as draught animals for plowing and transportation.

Due to their adaptation to local conditions, Horro cattle possess some degree of resistance to common tropical livestock diseases. Conservation efforts are ongoing to preserve the breed and improve its productivity through selective breeding programs. These efforts aim to enhance milk yield, growth rate, and overall resilience of the Horro breed, ensuring its continued contribution to the food security and economic well-being of the local communities.
