Saint Mary's Battery (Marsalforn)
Saint Mary's Battery, also known as Qolla l-Bajda Battery due to its location at Qolla l-Bajda point, is a coastal battery in Marsalforn, Gozo, Malta. It was built by the Order of Saint John in 1715–1716 as one of a series of coastal fortifications around the Maltese Islands. It formed part of a chain of batteries, redoubts, and entrenchments intended to defend Gozo's coastline. The battery's primary purpose was to protect Marsalforn Bay, a strategically important landing site.
The battery originally consisted of a semi-circular gun platform with a low parapet, a small blockhouse, and a ditch cut into the rock. It was initially armed with several cannons. The battery fell into disuse later in the 18th century.
Today, only the outline of the battery's platform remains. The blockhouse has been demolished, and the ditch is mostly filled in. Minimal visible remains are present, making it a less prominent historical site compared to other batteries in Malta. Its historical significance lies in its contribution to the overall defensive network of the Maltese Islands under the Order of Saint John.
