Hiroshi Inoue (bryologist)
Hiroshi Inoue (1932-1989) was a prominent Japanese bryologist, specializing in the taxonomy and biogeography of liverworts (Marchantiophyta). He made significant contributions to the understanding of the East Asian liverwort flora and the relationships between liverworts of different regions.
Inoue's research focused on the morphology, anatomy, and cytology of liverworts. He described numerous new species and genera, significantly expanding the known diversity of these plants. His work involved extensive fieldwork, collecting specimens from various locations in Japan, as well as other parts of Asia.
He published extensively throughout his career, including taxonomic revisions, floristic treatments, and comprehensive monographs. His publications are considered essential resources for bryologists studying liverworts, particularly those found in Asia.
Inoue also served as a professor at the National Science Museum in Tokyo, where he curated the bryophyte collection and mentored numerous students. His contributions to bryology have left a lasting legacy, and his work continues to be consulted by researchers worldwide. His passing in 1989 was a significant loss to the bryological community.
