Hill River (South Australia)

Hill River is a small settlement and a locality in the Mid North region of South Australia, situated approximately 130 kilometers north of Adelaide. The name refers to both the river that flows through the area and the associated agricultural district.

The Hill River itself is an ephemeral stream, meaning it only flows seasonally, typically during and after periods of significant rainfall. It eventually drains into the Broughton River.

Economically, the Hill River area is primarily dependent on agriculture, particularly sheep farming, cereal cropping (wheat, barley), and increasingly, viticulture. The climate, while generally dry, is conducive to certain types of grape growing, contributing to the wine industry in the broader Clare Valley region, which is located to the east.
