Hickie
A hickie (also known as a love bite, or kiss mark) is a bruise-like mark on the skin caused by suction, typically from kissing or sucking on the skin. The suction causes small blood vessels (capillaries) under the skin to break, leaking blood and resulting in a reddish or purplish discoloration similar to a bruise.
Hickies are most commonly found on the neck or chest, but can appear on other areas of the body as well. They are generally not painful, although the affected area may be slightly tender to the touch.
Hickies are not medically dangerous and typically fade within a few days to two weeks, similar to a regular bruise. The healing time can vary depending on the intensity of the suction and the individual's healing ability.
There is no guaranteed way to instantly remove a hickie. Applying a cold compress or ice pack shortly after it appears may help to reduce swelling and bruising. In the days following, warm compresses may help to promote blood flow and speed up healing. Some anecdotal remedies include applying arnica cream or vitamin K cream.
Hickies are generally considered a temporary cosmetic issue. Some individuals attempt to conceal them with clothing, makeup, or by wearing a scarf or turtleneck.
