Henry Vaughan (architect)

Henry Vaughan (1845-1917) was a prominent American church architect, known primarily for his Gothic Revival designs. He was born in Nansemond County, Virginia, and trained as an architect in England before establishing his practice in Boston, Massachusetts.

Vaughan's work is characterized by its attention to detail, craftsmanship, and the use of high-quality materials. He specialized in designing churches, chapels, and related ecclesiastical structures, frequently employing stone and elaborate ornamentation. His designs often incorporated elements of English Perpendicular Gothic architecture.

Some of his notable commissions include the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. (where he was responsible for the initial design of the choir and apse), St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Beverly, Massachusetts, and St. Mark's School chapel in Southborough, Massachusetts. He also designed numerous chapels and buildings for preparatory schools and colleges throughout the eastern United States.

Vaughan was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and a respected figure in the architectural community. His legacy lies in the many beautiful and enduring religious buildings he designed, which continue to be admired for their architectural integrity and spiritual atmosphere. His firm continued after his death, designing other notable structures.
