Hen with Sapphire Pendant (Fabergé egg)
The Hen with Sapphire Pendant egg, also known as the Sapphire Pendant Egg, is a jeweled Fabergé egg created under the supervision of Peter Carl Fabergé in 1886 for Tsar Alexander III of Russia as an Easter gift for his wife, Empress Maria Feodorovna. It is one of the earliest of the Imperial Easter eggs.
The exterior of the egg is enameled in opaque white and is divided into segments. The original egg contained a surprise: a jeweled gold hen, which in turn contained a replica of the Imperial crown with a ruby pendant and a sapphire pendant.
Unfortunately, both the replica of the Imperial crown and the ruby pendant have been lost to history. Only the gold hen remains.
The Hen with Sapphire Pendant egg is significant as one of the first Imperial eggs commissioned by Alexander III and demonstrates the craftsmanship and artistry that would become hallmarks of the Fabergé Easter eggs. Its relatively simple exterior belies the complexity and richness of the original contents, reflecting the opulent tastes of the Imperial family. Its current location is unknown.
