Harry Lumley (ice hockey)

Harry "Apple Cheeks" Lumley (November 11, 1926 – September 13, 1998) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980.

Lumley began his NHL career at the age of 17 with the Detroit Red Wings during the 1943-44 season, due to a wartime shortage of players. He played for the Red Wings, New York Rangers, Chicago Black Hawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Boston Bruins over the course of 17 seasons.

A durable and consistent netminder, Lumley was the first goaltender to play over 600 NHL games. He won the Vezina Trophy in 1954-55 while with the Detroit Red Wings, posting a league-leading 13 shutouts. Lumley also backstopped the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Stanley Cup championship in 1949, earning a shutout in the deciding game. He was known for his calm demeanor and positioning in the net.

After his NHL career ended in 1960, Lumley played in the minor leagues before retiring from professional hockey. He later worked as a scout and held various positions in the hockey world. He died in 1998 at the age of 71.
