Charlie Berry (second baseman)

Charlie Berry (1896-1972) was an American athlete who had a long and distinguished career in both Major League Baseball and the National Football League (NFL). While primarily known as a catcher in baseball, the "Charlie Berry (second baseman)" designation refers to a significantly less prominent part of his baseball journey, alluding to his earlier years and versatility.

Before establishing himself as a catcher, Berry spent limited time playing other positions, including second base. These appearances were infrequent and generally during the beginning of his professional career. Detailed records of these instances are not readily available, and his contributions at second base were minimal compared to his achievements as a catcher.

Berry played Major League Baseball from 1925 to 1945, primarily for the Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston Red Sox. He was an All-Star twice and a member of the Athletics' 1929 and 1930 World Series championship teams.

In addition to his baseball career, Berry was also a professional football player, playing end and halfback for the Pottsville Maroons, the Philadelphia Yellow Jackets, and the Frankford Yellow Jackets from 1921 to 1926. He was a key player on the Pottsville Maroons team that controversially was denied the NFL championship in 1925.

Following his playing career, Berry became a highly respected umpire in the American League, officiating from 1942 to 1962. He umpired in seven World Series and four All-Star Games, further solidifying his legacy in baseball.
