Hans Pietsch (mathematician)

Hans Pietsch (born April 28, 1968, in Gießen, Germany; died July 26, 2003, in Quezon City, Philippines) was a German mathematician and Go player.

Pietsch earned a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Giessen. His mathematical research area focused on knot theory.

Alongside his academic pursuits, Pietsch was a prominent figure in the European Go community. He achieved professional Go rank status and represented Europe in numerous international tournaments. He was known for his strong reading ability and aggressive fighting style. He was one of the leading European players for several years.

Pietsch was tragically killed in a robbery in Quezon City while traveling to the Philippines for a Go tournament. His death was a significant loss to both the mathematical and Go communities.
