Hannu Mäkelä (writer)

Hannu Mäkelä (born August 18, 1943) is a Finnish author, primarily known for his children's and young adult literature, but also a prolific writer of novels, short stories, plays, and non-fiction.

Mäkelä studied literature and philosophy at the University of Helsinki. He debuted as a writer in 1965 with the poetry collection Kävelin rinnalla. His breakthrough came with his children's books, particularly the series featuring the character Herra Huu (Mr. Boo), starting in 1973. These books are often praised for their imaginative and philosophical themes, addressing complex issues like death, loss, and identity in a way accessible to young readers.

Beyond children's literature, Mäkelä has written numerous adult novels exploring themes of Finnish history, societal change, and individual relationships. He is also a respected biographer, having written biographies of significant Finnish figures such as President Urho Kekkonen and author Mika Waltari.

Mäkelä's work has been translated into several languages, and he has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to Finnish literature, including the Finlandia Junior Prize.
