HMS Triumph (1870)

HMS Triumph was an ironclad battleship of the British Royal Navy, launched in 1870. She was one of two Swiftsure-class ironclads, her sister ship being HMS Swiftsure. Designed by Sir Edward Reed, the Swiftsure-class were built to be smaller and cheaper versions of the Audacious-class, intended for foreign service.

Triumph was initially armed with ten 9-inch muzzle-loading rifles, four on each broadside and two mounted as chase guns, and four 6-inch guns. She underwent refits throughout her career, with later armament configurations including breech-loading guns.

Her service included time on the Pacific Station, the Mediterranean Fleet, and as a guard ship in British waters. Triumph participated in several naval reviews and exercises, showcasing the power of the Royal Navy.

In 1903, Triumph was converted into a training ship and renamed Indus IV. She served in this role at Devonport until being sold for scrap in 1920. While not involved in any major battles, HMS Triumph played a significant role in projecting British naval power and training future generations of sailors during a period of rapid technological advancement in naval warfare.
