HMS St George (1785)

HMS St George was a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched in 1785. She was built at Plymouth Dockyard to the lines of the Intrepid class, a modified version of the earlier Bellona-class design.

St George saw action during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Notably, she participated in the Battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1797, under the command of Captain John Sutton. She was also present at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, under Captain Thomas Masterman Hardy.

The ship underwent several refits and repairs throughout her service life. In 1811, while under the command of Rear-Admiral Robert Carthew Reynolds and en route to England, HMS St George was wrecked off Jutland in a severe storm. The disaster resulted in the loss of most of her crew, including Rear-Admiral Reynolds. The wreck of St George remains a significant historical site.
