HMS Peterel (1794)
HMS Peterel was a Royal Navy sloop launched in 1794. Originally the French brig Pierre, she was captured in 1794 and commissioned into the Royal Navy. Peterel participated in several notable actions, primarily in the Mediterranean, during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.
Her early career saw action against French privateers and involvement in various fleet engagements. In 1799, under the command of Captain Sir Thomas Staines, Peterel participated in the capture of several prizes and distinguished herself in actions off the coast of Italy.
In 1805, Peterel played a role in the Battle of Trafalgar, though not as a primary fighting ship. She was tasked with rescuing survivors from wrecked ships and assisting damaged vessels in the aftermath of the battle.
Later in her career, Peterel continued to serve in the Mediterranean, engaging in anti-piracy patrols and convoy escort duties. She was eventually sold out of the service in 1811. Her career exemplified the diverse roles played by smaller vessels in the Royal Navy during a period of intense naval warfare.
