HMS Liverpool (1860)

HMS Liverpool was a wooden screw frigate of the Royal Navy, launched in 1860. She was one of the Galatea-class frigates, designed by Isaac Watts.

Design and Construction:

The Galatea-class frigates were designed as an improved version of the earlier Diadem-class, with enhanced speed and armament. HMS Liverpool was constructed of wood, with iron strengthening. Her length was approximately 280 feet, with a beam of around 45 feet. She was powered by a two-cylinder horizontal single expansion steam engine, built by Humphrys, Tennant and Dykes, driving a single screw. She also carried a full sailing rig.

Service History:

HMS Liverpool was commissioned in 1860 and served on various foreign stations, including the Pacific and China Stations. Her duties primarily involved protecting British interests, suppressing the slave trade, and showing the flag. She participated in various diplomatic missions and provided support to British communities abroad.

Armament:

The armament of HMS Liverpool changed throughout her career. Upon commissioning, she typically carried a mix of smoothbore and rifled muzzle-loading guns. This typically consisted of Armstrong breech-loading guns as well as traditional smoothbore cannons. These guns were mounted on the broadside.

Fate:

HMS Liverpool was decommissioned in the late 1870s and subsequently sold out of service.
