HMS Euryalus (1853)

HMS Euryalus was a 51-gun screw frigate of the Royal Navy, launched in 1853. She was designed by the Surveyor of the Navy, Sir Baldwin Walker, and was one of a series of steam-powered frigates built during a period of rapid technological change in naval warfare.

The Euryalus saw active service in the Crimean War, participating in operations in the Baltic Sea. She was later assigned to the China Station, where she played a significant role in the Second Opium War (1856-1860). During this conflict, she took part in the capture of Canton (Guangzhou) in 1857 and the capture of the Taku Forts in 1858. Captain John Warden commanded her during this period.

After her service in China, the Euryalus returned to Britain and underwent a refit. She was subsequently employed in various roles, including service as a training ship.

The Euryalus was eventually sold out of the navy in 1867, marking the end of her active career. She represents a key transitional design in naval architecture, bridging the gap between traditional sailing frigates and more modern, steam-powered ironclads. Her service history reflects the evolving geopolitical landscape of the mid-19th century and the Royal Navy's global reach.
