HMAS Warrego (U73)
HMAS Warrego (U73) was a Grimsby-class sloop of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Built at Cockatoo Island Dockyard in Sydney, she was launched in 1940 and commissioned in 1940. Warrego served primarily as a convoy escort and anti-submarine warfare vessel during World War II in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Her duties included escorting troop transports, supply ships, and other vessels vital to the war effort.
She participated in numerous convoy escort duties and anti-submarine patrols. Warrego was involved in the search for, but not the sinking of, the German raider Kormoran following its engagement with HMAS Sydney.
Following the end of World War II, Warrego served in a variety of roles, including training duties. She was decommissioned in 1959 and subsequently scuttled off Rottnest Island, Western Australia, in 1960 to create an artificial reef and diving site. The wreck remains a popular location for recreational diving.
