Guru (rapper)

Guru (born Keith Edward Elam; July 17, 1961 – April 19, 2010) was an American rapper, record producer, and actor, best known as one half of the hip hop duo Gang Starr, alongside DJ Premier. His name, Guru, is an acronym for "Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal".

Guru was born in Roxbury, Boston. He attended Morehouse College in Atlanta before transferring to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

Gang Starr, formed in 1985, achieved significant critical and commercial success, releasing six studio albums including the highly influential "Step in the Arena" (1991) and "Daily Operation" (1992). Guru was renowned for his distinctive monotone delivery, intelligent lyrics, and jazz-influenced sound.

In addition to his work with Gang Starr, Guru embarked on a successful solo career, beginning with the "Jazzmatazz" series. These albums fused hip hop with jazz musicians, featuring collaborations with artists such as Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers, and Branford Marsalis. The "Jazzmatazz" project was highly praised for its innovative approach and contribution to the fusion of jazz and hip hop. He released four "Jazzmatazz" albums.

Guru also collaborated with numerous other artists throughout his career, further cementing his legacy as a respected figure in hip hop.

Guru passed away on April 19, 2010, after a battle with cancer. His legacy continues to inspire and influence hip hop artists.
