Grizzly (comics)

Grizzly, in comic books, most commonly refers to a supervillain who has appeared in Marvel Comics. There have been multiple characters using the alias, but the best-known is Maxwell Markham.

Maxwell Markham, as Grizzly:

Maxwell Markham was a former professional wrestler who, after being banned from the sport, was recruited by the Jackal (Miles Warren) to be a supervillain to fight Spider-Man. The Jackal subjected Markham to a procedure involving genetic manipulation and cybernetic enhancements, granting him superhuman strength, agility, and a thick, claw-like fur covering his body, transforming him into the Grizzly. His signature move involved bear-like attacks and grappling.

As Grizzly, he became a recurring foe for Spider-Man, often partnering with other villains. He was frequently portrayed as somewhat dim-witted, and his plans tended to be unsuccessful. Over time, his augmentations sometimes malfunctioned, leading to humorous or self-defeating situations. He has been a member of various villain teams, including the Legion Accursed.

A later, more dangerous version of Grizzly emerged, unrelated to Markham, and possessed enhanced abilities and a more ruthless nature. This version presented a significantly greater threat.

Powers and Abilities (Maxwell Markham version):

  • Superhuman Strength: Enhanced strength allowing him to lift considerable weight and overpower normal humans.
  • Superhuman Agility: Improved agility, reflexes, and coordination.
  • Claws: Retractable claws on his hands and feet, capable of tearing through various materials.
  • Enhanced Durability: Increased resistance to physical injury.
  • Bear-Like Attributes: Possesses various bear-like physical characteristics, including thick fur and a powerful build.

Other Characters:

While Maxwell Markham is the primary character associated with the Grizzly alias, other individuals have briefly used the name or a variation of it. These characters are generally less prominent and lack the established history of Maxwell Markham.
