Gorgan (river)
The Gorgan River, also known as the Gurgan River, is a river located in northern Iran. It originates in the Alborz Mountains and flows westward into the southeastern corner of the Caspian Sea, specifically Gorgan Bay (formerly Astarabad Bay).
The river is historically significant for its role in irrigating the fertile plains of Gorgan and its surrounding areas. It has been vital for agriculture in the region for centuries. The river's flow is subject to seasonal variations, with higher discharge during spring snowmelt and lower flow during the drier summer months.
Modern concerns related to the Gorgan River include issues of water quality, water management, and the impact of agricultural runoff and urban development on the river's ecosystem and the Caspian Sea. Efforts are being made to balance agricultural needs with the environmental sustainability of the river and its surrounding watershed.
