Bred by Rokeby Stables, Give Thanks was sired by Mill Reef, a champion British racehorse, out of the mare Ossian's Nurse.

Trained by Michael Stoute, Give Thanks primarily raced in England. Her most significant victory came in the 1983 Benson and Hedges Gold Cup at York Racecourse, a prestigious Group 1 race for fillies and mares. This win solidified her reputation as a top-class stayer. She also achieved other notable placings in Group races.
